We won’t beat around the bush – we’re very proud of the quality digital strategy services we provide at Energise. As a digital marketing agency, we’ve built umpteen websites for our clients. But even so, it’s important to change hats and be our own client every now and then. Recently, we decided to rebuild our website, which provided a fantastic opportunity to review our processes from a client’s perspective. So, what did we (re)learn during this experience?
1. Process, process, process
Having a detailed process is important, but ensuring it’s understood by both our team and the client is essential. While we’re pretty sure our processes are solid, this website rebuild was a golden opportunity to review and refine them. As an agency, you become familiar with your process and know it like the back of your hand, so it’s easy to assume the client gets it too. However, that’s not always the case.
We revisited our website process and examined every step to see if it stood up from a client’s viewpoint. We’d be lying if we said it didn’t reveal areas where we could improve, so our explanations have become more thorough and our process more transparent. Clients need to understand each phase of the project, from initial briefing to final delivery. Clear documentation and regular updates keep everyone on the same page.
2. Too much communication? There’s no such thing
Communication will make or break any project. We know a solid brief and an accurate scope are the first steps to success. However, it’s easy to overlook that clients might not always be aware of how critical these elements are. Scope creep is a common issue that will increase costs and extend timelines (and it’s something every marketer dreads).
During our website build, we made a concerted effort to over-communicate. We made sure our check-ins were regular, progress reports detailed, and the dialogue between team and “client” was open. We emphasised there were no stupid questions because every question saves time and money down the line! Clear and proactive communication helped us avoid misunderstandings and helped the project stay on track.
3. Client perspective is all that matters
One of the most significant lessons we (re)learnt was the importance of seeing the project from the client’s perspective. If we don’t see the picture the client sees, we run into problems. Understanding their expectations and interpretations goes a long way to delivering a successful project.
By actively centering our approach around the client’s perspective, we tightened our project management and delivery. We asked ourselves what a client would think at each stage of the process and adjusted accordingly. This reaffirmed that our marketing-led approach is effective, but there is always room to better align our services with client expectations.
Go on, be your own client
We highly recommend being your own client from time to time. It’s an invaluable exercise that will highlight areas for improvement in your processes and communication strategies. Our digital strategy consultants are great at what they do, and this exercise allowed us to do even better. Whether you’re a B2B marketer or a B2B business, taking a step back and evaluating your services through your client’s eyes will provide fresh insights and drive better results.
Rebuilding our website was more than just a refresh. It was a comprehensive review of our digital strategy services and processes. We (re)learnt the importance of a detailed process, the necessity of over-communicating, and the value of seeing things from the client’s perspective. These lessons have strengthened our approach and reaffirmed our commitment to delivering high-quality digital strategy solutions. Want to see the final result? Take a look around – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
